WOOLOOWARE PROJECT
Woolooware – Rear Extension & Open-Plan Transformation
A major rear extension to an older fibro home, creating a new open-plan kitchen, dining and living area flowing directly to a covered alfresco space and the existing pool.
PROJECT SUMMARY
Opening up the rear of the home
The Woolooware project involved a substantial rear extension to an existing fibro home. The original house was built on piers, while the new extension was constructed on a slab-on-ground system, requiring careful coordination of levels, ceiling heights and roof lines so the new work integrated properly with the existing structure.
The rear extension created a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area on a polished concrete floor flowing directly to a covered alfresco space and the existing pool. Because of the wide open span, the original design was revised to incorporate a structural steel portal frame to support the new roof and open layout.
Internally, the existing front lounge and dining area was reconfigured to create two additional bedrooms, while the front lounge window arrangement was also changed as part of the renovation.
The project also included a complete re-roof of the house, new guttering and full external cladding, giving the original home and new extension a consistent finished appearance.
THE BUILD
Structural steel, level changes and careful integration
One of the key construction challenges was integrating the new slab-on-ground extension with the original pier-supported house while maintaining the required floor, ceiling and roof relationships between the old and new sections.
The large open-plan rear area required a substantial steel portal frame, which had to be carefully erected and positioned before the surrounding structure could be completed.
Once the structural frame was in place, the extension was built around it to create a continuous living space that opened directly to the alfresco and pool areas.
The completed works combined the new extension, internal reconfiguration, re-roofing, guttering and cladding into a cohesive renovation that substantially changed how the home functioned and presented.
