CAMPERDOWN PROJECT
Camperdown – Major Renovation & Character Extension
A substantial inner-city renovation and extension that combined major structural changes with retained character elements, custom detailing and strong Asian and Balinese influences.
PROJECT SUMMARY
A renovation shaped around the character of the existing home
The Camperdown project involved extensive work throughout the house, including ground and first floor extensions, new kitchen and bathroom areas, and major upgrades to both the front and rear of the property.
One of the defining features of the existing home was a series of substantial timber beams from earlier structural work. Rather than conceal them, the owners wanted them retained as a feature, so the beams were exposed, treated and incorporated into the finished ground-floor ceiling with the lining carefully fitted between them.
The rear living areas were opened up with stacker doors to connect the kitchen and dining spaces with a new Japanese-inspired garden, while a number of interior and exterior details were influenced by the owners’ time spent in Bali and other parts of Asia.
THE BUILD
Blending new work with existing character
The project required careful coordination between the new extensions and the existing structure, particularly where original structural elements were being retained and made part of the finished design rather than hidden.
The exposed timber beams became a major architectural feature of the ground floor, requiring detailed finishing and careful integration with the new ceiling, lighting and surrounding spaces.
The result was a highly individual home that combined substantial renovation and extension work with retained structural character, new indoor-outdoor living areas and a strong mix of Japanese and Balinese design influences.
